Latino demographics have changed the world of politics and the market of ideas. Intellectual entrepreneurs, however, have not changed as fast as business entrepreneurs. Their think tanks, especially those that are committed to the free society, have only recently created educational and policy programs targeting Hispanics.
Among the 50.7 million Hispanics in the United States, nearly two-thirds (65%), or 33 million, self-identify as being of Mexican origin, according to tabulations of the 2010 American Community Survey (ACS) by the Pew Hispanic Center. Overall, the 10 largest Hispanic origin groups—-Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Salvadorans, Dominicans, Guatemalans, Colombians, Hondurans, Ecuadorians and Peruvians—-make up 92% of the U.S. Hispanic population. Six Hispanic origin groups have populations greater than 1 million.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) offered criticism Thursday morning of President Obama’s recent executive action dealing with illegal immigrants beyond the oft-heard Republican point that it was “extra-constitutional.” In Rubio’s words, “we don’t know how many will be affected by it, whether kids will come up and identify themselves as illegal” and that the president’s order was in no way bipartisan.
President Obama is gradually transforming America into a socialist authoritarian state. This is the real meaning of his recent decision to grant backdoor amnesty to young illegal immigrants. Mr. Obama is behaving like a Latin American strongman, who asserts arbitrary power and ignores the rule of law. He is assaulting the very pillars of our constitutional republic.
I have criticized Obama’s manipulative political decisions, especially when it comes to the Latino community. First, when he was a senator he opposed immigration reform that senators Ted Kennedy and John McCain had worked on. Second, he promised that if elected, he would implement immigration reform in his first 100 days in office, he never did. Third, he has deported more immigrants than any other recent president, and separated hundreds of thousands of families while claiming they had criminal records, when in fact the vast majority did not.
SB 1070 was passed by the state Legislature and signed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer. Opinion polls consistently show a strong majority of Arizonans supports SB 1070. Hence, the administration is seeking to overturn the democratic will of the people. Mr. Obama wants to subordinate states’ rights to the growing federal Leviathan.
